Forest Research

New Forest

Earlier this year we provided a climbing arboricultural work team to collect small quantities of cones/seeds and branch material (to provide seed as part of a research project) from 48 selected Western Hemlock trees within a Forest Research progeny trial in the New Forest. Because of the location, all the trees had to be climbed without spikes, so as not to cause any damage. All the trees measured between 31-36m. Western Hemlock cones were only suitable for collection during a short period of time from late August into early September so this was quiet a tight timeframe which was also dependant on the ripening of the cones themselves. A great project to get our teeth into and we look forward to the results of the research
